Irish Bikers
There is a way of life in Ireland that is fraught with contradictions.
Offering the solitude of sole pursuit but yet one which exists within a powerful group loyalty and friendship. They present an image that can sometimes elicit fear and suspicion, yet as a body, raise more money for charity than any other sector in Ireland.
Irish bikers indulge in a way of life and social activity that is founded on a love of two wheels, the enjoyment of the ride, the mechanical challenge and discourse, a powerful and heightened sense of camaraderie, with passion and dedication to their bike, club and fellow bikers.
With a range of diverse backgrounds, experiences, jobs, and family life, biking is truly agnostic and classless. The stereotypical biker image masks however the personality, emotion and pride that distinguishes our biking friends.
I have attempted within this portfolio of images to capture the personality and uniqueness of my biking subjects. Seeking out subjects across the island of Ireland, each person offered a glimpse into their emotions and experiences through biking, whether loyalty, excitement, mechanical passion, or personal highs and lows.
Each of the locations for the Bikers shown here today is different and each location offered a bond or empathy to the bikers own lifestyle or history…, an emotion , a physicality or a greater belief that is unique and personal to each subject.
It is this uniqueness and the essence of the individual that I have attempted to capture.
The hidden biker, the way of life, the depth of emotion, the bikers of disparate backgrounds and direction have contributed to this exhibition most generously and for that I am grateful for their time and trust.
